The Mitsubishi Eclipse is making a comeback, except this time, it won’t be a V6-powered sports coupe. And what better opportunity than a historical solar eclipse to show off the brand-new model?
The maker has been axing models from its lineup for the past few years, the RVR and Outlander being the last two vehicles still holding the fort. Now that the Nissan-Renault group bought over a third of the struggling company’s shares, it has thoroughly reworked its strategy. It will now focus on SUVs to get some wind back in its sails. After all, the RVR and Outlander are showing satisfying performances on the market, the first one being the brand’s best seller and the latter, the best-selling plug-in hybrid model in Europe.

Now that the “fat” has been trimmed, it is time to add some muscle and on Monday, August 21st, the first new model to be introduced to the maker’s lineup in a few years will be unveiled. Live from Salem, Oregon, first American state to see the total eclipse, Mitsubishi will show the 2018 Eclipse Cross, a golden marketing opportunity.
They plan on taking pictures of the Eclipse… with the eclipse, and stream the event online. No other details have been announced yet regarding the new model. On the European market, buyers will have a choice between a 1.5L turbocharged engine or a 2.2L turbodiesel one. We can expect more information on Monday morning.
