Finland-based Nokian Tyres, possessing a reputation of building hardwearing winter tires, is returning to the ultra-high-performance all-season space with the launch of the Surpass AS01.
“Today, we are pleased to introduce an ultra-high-performance tire that overtakes the typical UHP product. For sure, drivers with powerful cars want a tire that can help unleash their vehicles full potential. But let’s be honest, many of the same drivers who let it roar on Sunday take the kids to school on Monday, and while we all love tearing up dry tarmac, what about when there’s a torrential downpour?” posed director of marketing Hans Dyhrman at the virtual launch event.
Designed for the North American market and targeting everything from sporty vehicles to luxury SUVs, the low rolling-resistance construction means it’s compatible for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, hybrids as well as EVs. During the presentation, video of both a turbocharged Mazda MX-5 and a Tesla model Y shod in the new offering was shown driving in different environments.
Borrowing some tech already benefitting the all-terrain Outpost line, the Surpass boasts puncture-resistant Aramid fibers (also utilized to make bulletproof vests) to guard against potholes, random debris and general wear and tear. And if the tire does suffer unrepairable damage within one year of purchase and has more than 60 per cent tread remaining, the buyer receives a replacement at no extra cost through the Pothole Protection warranty.
So where does the UHP part come in? Thanks to more silica in the recipe than any other Nokian all-season model, the high-friction compound helps the AS01 grip to the road for quick acceleration, spirited cornering and shorter braking distances — even in wet weather. This is aided by a tailored tread pattern featuring four wide circumferential grooves and many smaller notches to expel water from the contact patch, while the shoulder “claws” and 3D siping (small slits) provide extra bite on rain and light snow-covered surfaces.
Steve Bourassa, director of products and planning, spoke about the company’s core focus on sustainability.
“Carefully selected raw materials such as silica, recycled carbon black, bio-based and non-petroleum-based resins are all used in the rubber compounds found throughout the tire. High proportion of recycled and renewable materials are used to reduce the environmental impact of the tire over the product life cycle. A durable and long-lasting tire helps consumers get more for their money, and helps to reduce the number of tires being sent to the recycling centers,” said Bourassa.
A neat innovation recently introduced is the Driving Safety Indicator. Rather than using the traditional method of using a penny or other object to measure remaining life, a series of numbers located in the centre of the tire sequentially wear away to reveal the current percentage level. The Nokian Surpass AS01 includes a 90,000-kilometetre treadwear warranty and is scheduled to officially release on Feb. 18, in 65 sizes for wheels between 16 and 21 inches.
