There’s something about Jaguars that fascinates; especially since their most recent head of design started working his magic with results that are consistently elegant and sexy. The crown jewel of the designer’s chef d’oeuvre is in my humble opinion the Jaguar F-Type. This two-seater sport coupe looks good from every angle – I defy you to find anything the least bit unpleasant. It is also standing at the sportiest end of the automaker’s spectrum. The 2017 F-Type I had the joy of driving was this hot, all-black little number, equipped with a musical V6 supercharged engine and, yes, a six-speed manual transmission.
It is always a guilty pleasure to spend a week in the F-Type. Last year I gave the F-Type S Coupe a try and it was spectacular. But this model, despite being “entry-level” (assuming $81,500 can be considered entry-level) has been the most fun of the two. A total of 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque propel the convertible from a standstill to 100 km/h in under six second. It’s not supercar fast, but it’s definitely fun fast.
The buckets seats, high console and enveloping cockpit make me feel one with the car. With the keys in hand, every excuse is a good reason to add a few more kilometers to the odometer. Contrary to other kitties in the Jaguar lineup, F-Type stays connected with its sport tuned suspension and excellent feedback through the steering wheel. It is definitely a driver’s car and I am a driver so we were meant to be together. With an elegant but visceral exhaust note, a feline silhouette and the fact this drop-dead gorgeous, premium two-seater still gets my engine running, it had to be one of my favorites of 2016.
