The Toyota RAV4 is one of the most popular vehicle models sold in Canada, and you would be hard pressed drive too long on any road in this country without passing one.
And for 2024, the RAV4 is offered in gasoline and hybrid versions, with 16 different variants available ranging in price from $32,950 to just over $61,000.
The Trail AWD trim we tested, with an extra $540 added for paint, cost $43,153.58.
The Rav4 Trail is a notch above the XLE model, and adds 19-inch Trail edition alloy wheels, a 3,500-pound towing rating, Toyota’s Dynamic Torque Vectoring Differential with Rear Driveline Disconnect, wireless device charging, a 120V/100W AC power outlet in the cargo area, LED fog lamps, bridge type roof rails, Softex upholstery, and cargo side net and luggage net.
Powertrain: The Trail version is powered by a gasoline-only 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque it produces are more than adequate for the RAV4 and make it an enjoyable drive from behind the wheel.
The Trail model comes with Toyota’s all-wheel drive system, which acquitted itself well during a snowfall while I had the Rav4.
Even when in gas-only format, the RAV4 has an estimated average fuel economy of 8.5 litres per 100 kilometres, and I was able to achieve a respectable 10.0 L/100 km.
Exterior: The current edition is an attractively-styled crossover, with a nicely shaped front fascia and grille. That helps the RAV4 stand out a little from the others in this crowded segment.
The exterior features a two-tone paint scheme, featuring the new-for-2024 Army Green body with Ice Edge (white) roof. The 19-inch dark wheels are a nice finishing touch on the outside.
Viewed from the side, the accent lines on the RAV4 draw the eye upward and to the rear, which features large wraparound taillights and a day exhaust.
Interior: The Trail edition offers a spacious cabin and this trim features Softex seating in a Mocha two-tone colour scheme, also new for 2024.
The front seats, which are fairly comfortable, are heated as is the steering wheel. Rear seating provides decent legroom for your passengers, and the headroom is also good.
There are deep orange accents throughout the cabin, including around the cupholders, wireless charging pad and stitching throughout the dash and seats.
The RAV4 offers a very spacious cargo compartment behind the rear bench, with 60/40 benches that can be lowered for more room if needed.
Infotainment: The standard 8-inch screen for the Toyota Multimedia system is functional for the RAV4, and the software itself is effective and easy to use.
It is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and features satellite radio and 5 USB charging ports, which is a lot given the size of the Rav4.
The six-speaker setup on the Trail was a little uninspiring, especially considering there’s an 11-speaker JBL system just one trim above the tester.
Drive: I found that the RAV4 delivers a solid performance on the open road and on city streets, but can be a little sluggish when passing slower moving vehicles on the highway.
Steering and handling are both solid, but not as dynamic or engaging as some other competitors. That said, the overall drive is more than acceptable.
The RAV4 Trail has several driver-selectable modes, including Eco, Sport, Mud, Rock, and Snow.
Conclusion: Toyota’s popular SUV is one of the best-selling vehicles in Canada and for good reason. With so many different variants available, including electrified versions, the crossover has something for every consumer in the market.
The Trail version offers a unique appearance and enhanced towing capability, which makes it even more relevant to buyers who would use the RAV4 for weekend trips while being able to haul some toys for everyone’s enjoyment.
