Hoonigan, featuring two-time Formula Drift Champion Chris Forsberg and Ryan Tuerck, joined forces with Nissan to take holiday shopping in a completely new direction. Working with the creative forces behind the successful Gymkhana and Recoil video series, a specially prepared 1,000 horsepower Nissan 370Z raced through the abandoned Hawthorne Mall near Los Angeles. The results are compelling if not totally insane!
The Black Friday 360 Experience is designed to put consumers and fans of the sport in the passenger seat. Chris Forsberg describes one scene in which he was required to swing the Nissan 370Z on the ledge of a 9.1-metre drop.
“I knew I could mentally block out the drop, however my biggest concern was the surface,” admitted Forsberg. “The conditions were dusty and underneath all of that was polished concrete. We had one chance to get the shot before the rubber built up.” According to Chris, a rubber buildup actually adds traction that would compromise the control of the car when drifting.
First opened in 1977, a portion of Hawthorne Mall closed in 1999 and has been featured in numerous Hollywood movies over the years including Minority Report (2002), The Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006), The Green Hornet (2006) and Gone Girl (2014) to name a few.
GoPro cameras were used throughout the making of the video, with both drivers weaving and swerving in tandem or creating a cloud of dust through which the next car explodes in rapid succession. Nissan has been a long term partner with Hoonigan and the two companies work together on a regular basis to develop exclusive drifting video content. The “Black Friday 360 Experience” is currently available on Nissan YouTube using the Chrome browser.
